Hallux Rigidus (arthritis) causes pain and stiffness in the toe joint. Overtime, it can become difficult & painful to bend the toe. In these cases, a toe replacement or resurfacing procedure may be necessary to alleviate the pain. For less severe cases, where the damage is contained to one side of the joint, the Toe HemiCAP can be an appropriate treatment option whereas for more severe cases where damage is on both sides of the joint, the ToeMotion Total Toe implant could be the right course of treatment. This system consists of the metatarsal based HemiCAP implant and a metal baseplate with plastic insert for the opposing (phalangeal) side of the joint. The difference between the ToeMotion implant and other existing replacements is that it is implanted into the bone, rather than on top, recreating the natural anatomy & shape of the bone. (Think of a cavity filling rather than a root canal). This implant does not disturb any of the surrounding tissue attachments which are needed to maintain stability.
A hammertoe is a deformity that causes a toe to bend abnormally (usually downward) in the middle of the joint. Hammertoes usually begin as a minor deformity but overtime will get progressively worse. Treatment options for hammertoe can include pins, screws and implants used to straighten the toe(s). Joint resection can also be performed.
A fusion is a procedure where the phalangeal and metatarsal bones are cut and shaped to fit (Fuse) together. The two bones are then aligned, set at a predetermined angle and permanently fixed with either screws and/or a plate so the two bones “fuse” together permanently. The two bones are held together with metal plate that is placed on the bone to achieve fusion of the joint. Once fusion is achieved though, the toe can no longer bend, changing the way you walk. Although it provides excellent pain control, a fusion is considered a procedure of last resort because it eliminates any MTP movement, and can create limitations on daily activities and types of shoes patients are able to wear. Permanent activity modifications have made this procedure less attractive to the younger, active patient.
A bunion is an unnatural bony growth on the side of the big toe. This growth can cause the big toe to angle inward toward the other toes, resulting in pain and discomfort. The KISSloc™ Bunion Correction System corrects this angle and relieves the pain, pressure and discomfort. Many factors can lead to the formation of a bunion, but genetics and shoe wear are most often to blame.
